Courtesy of Formative Modern
A hammered silver bowl by French silversmith Jean Déspres, set atop a row of silver spheres resembling a strand of pearls. During WWI, Jean Déspres worked in a military workshop manufacturing airplane engines, which would inform his artistic sensibility when he joined the Modern movement to create jewelry and decorative objects. In the work of Déspres, there is no illusion to the materiality of the metal; the work is precise but at times brutal in its Modernism, with its hammered surfaces and bold details. Rather than relying on superfluous ornament, Déspres mastered light, shadow and reflection in the contrasting surfaces of his multi-faceted pieces. Signed “J. Déspres.”
